How the venue and nonprofit work together

ShapeShifter Lab & ShapeShifter Plus

ShapeShifter Lab and ShapeShifter Plus share a public-facing mission space, but they serve different functions. This page explains those roles in plain language for artists, audiences, donors, and community partners.

Organizational relationship

ShapeShifter Lab (“SSL”) and ShapeShifter Plus, Inc. (“SS+”) work closely together, but they have distinct roles. SSL is the Brooklyn venue and gathering space. SS+ is the presenting organization: a charitable nonprofit recognized as tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3).

ShapeShifter Lab
The Venue
  • Physical performance, rehearsal, and community space.
  • Venue operations, room use, production logistics, and house policies.
  • Host location for SS+ programs and other approved uses.
ShapeShifter Plus
The 501(c)(3) Presenter
  • Charitable nonprofit presenting organization.
  • Curates and presents performances, education, and community programs.
  • Receives tax-deductible donations to support its nonprofit mission, as allowed by law.

In practice, SS+ may present programs at SSL, and SSL may provide the venue setting where those programs happen. This overview is intended to clarify public-facing roles; it is not legal or tax advice, and individual events, rentals, donations, and purchases are governed by the terms shown for that specific transaction.

SSL: space and operations

SSL is the place where people gather: the rooms, equipment, production environment, and venue policies that make performances and community uses possible.

SS+: mission and presenting

SS+ advances the charitable mission through presenting, educational, and community programming, including programs that may take place at SSL.
